(HOUSTON, Aug 15, 2019) – Creative team Rem and Bikkuri in collaboration with Hiveworks Comics are excited to announce the first-ever Kickstarter for their webcomic Devil’s Candy—an action/comedy series within a gothic fantasy world—to produce a Volume 1 paperback and an all-new artbook!
The manga-styled webcomic Devil’s Candy follows the adventures of boy genius Kazu Decker and Pandora, a human-like girl he created for a science project. Pandora is learning that life at a devil high school is a hilarious day-to-day struggle: there’s little rest for the students between runaway science experiments, howling apparitions, and a deadly fashion show! But even savage schoolyard skirmishes can’t prepare Kazu, Pandora, and their friends for the struggle against a super-powered secret society of daemons determined to grind all of devil society under their heel.
The short manga pilot for Devil’s Candy won the grand prize in the very first TOKYOPOP Rising Stars of Manga contest in 2002. After a decade of working on the story while pursuing other high-profile projects in the manga/anime industry, Rem (artist) and Bikkuri (writer) launched the full Devil’s Candy series as a webcomic to a growing readership nurtured by their webcomic publisher Hiveworks Comics. Almost five years into its digital serialization, and after a French version was published in paperback format by Hachette France, the series is ready to move into print in the English language through this Kickstarter: both with a Volume 1 paperback and a special full-color artbook for the series.
“Devil’s Candy is my baby; I take a lot of care in making it,” says Rem, artist of Devil’s Candy. “I feel the most comfortable inking traditionally and I hope that really shows through when the comic is printed on paper. It was always meant to be read as a physical book and this is the first time we’ve been able to print it exactly how we hoped the readers could enjoy it.
“Another first for me is printing an artbook!” Rem adds. “Since we’ve accumulated so much extra material over the five years the comic’s been running online, it really makes sense to offer that to our fans, and I hope they enjoy it!”
The Devil’s Candy Kickstarter fundraiser has already begun and will run through Sept 14, 2019. Hiveworks Comics, the publisher of the webcomic version of Devil’s Candy, is producing the Kickstarter with the creators and will be fulfilling the rewards through early 2020.
